Q:How does Contact Tracing for COVID-19 work? How do I make sure it’s not a scam if I get a phone call?

A:Contact tracing is tracking that is being conducted by public health workers to slow the spread of COVID-19. If you have been in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19, a contact tracer may get in touch with you.

The Contact Tracer will talk with you to confirm you were exposed to the virus. They may suggest you get tested and ask you to self-quarantine for 14 days, monitoring yourself for symptoms of the virus. You will also be asked to notify your doctor or seek emergency care if you develop symptoms or if your symptoms become worse.

You will be asked to think about everyone you have been around recently. If you are tested and the test is positive, someone from the health department may call you to check on your health, discuss who you have been around, and ask where you spent time while you may have been contagious.

Any discussion you have with the Contact Tracer or other health department staff are confidential. This means that your personal and medical information will be kept private and only shared with those who may need to know, like your health care provider. Your name will not be shared with those you came in contact with. Don’t be scammed

There are a number of ways you can tell if a Contact Tracer is legitimate. Contact Tracers will provide their name, the phone number and name of the agency they work for. During contact tracing, the health department staff will never ask you for your Social Security or Medicare number, bank information, credit card numbers or other financial information. There is no charge to you, your insurance company or Medicare for their services. If you have concerns, contact your local health department or call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE to confirm their information.
