Miles Miller is going to have a hard time topping his varsity football debut.

A freshman who was thrust into duty when Berkshire’s starting quarterback went down with a hand injury, Miller scored on a 20yard keeper in overtime, leading the Badgers to a 27-21 win over Cardinal in the annual Kinsman Cup rivalry game.

Prior to his game-winner, Miller sent the game to overtime with a two-point conversion run to even the score at 21.

“I was happy I could do it for the seniors,” Miller said. “This is the last time our seniors get to play Cardinal, so I’m glad I could help us get the win.”

Normal starting quarterback Jake Brown had run for 115 yards and a score and thrown a touchdown pass to his cousin, Josh, before departing with a cut on his index finger.

Miller was unflappable when called upon.

“He’s a kid who rises to the occasion,” Coach Josh DeWeese said. “We saw the type of player he was all summer.”

• On the outside, Ethan Yost was calm, cool and collected. Inside, his heart was doing backflips.

The junior kicker from Geneva kicked a 27-yard field goal with three seconds left on the clock, leading the host Eagles to a 17-14 win over Madison.

It’s Yost’s first year of playing football, though he is a veteran on the Geneva soccer team.

“In my head, I was flipping out. I was so excited,” Yost said. “Everyone was jumping on me.” Madison missed a field goal with less than two minutes left that would have given the Blue Streaks the lead.

Geneva marched down the field with quarterback Ben Scibona making some big plays to get the Eagles within field goal range with less than 10 seconds remaining. The snap by Wyatt Fuduric, the hold by Clayton Queen and the kick by Yost were good.

“I didn’t want to overkick it and miss it,” Yost said. “I hit it on the sweet spot. As soon as I kicked it, I knew it was good.”

Charlie Taylor led Geneva with 107 rushing yards. Scobona and Brady Peet had touchdown runs. Brad McKeon led Madison with two rushing touchdowns.

• Chase Fortkamp ran for 203 yards and three touchdowns as Wickiffe hammered Lutheran West, 41-0, in its season opener. Mason Bala ran for 184 yards and two scores for the Blue Devils, who outgained the opposition, 472-88.

• Freshman Brayden Richards threw for 190 yards and three touchdowns in his varsity debut as Perry beat Edgewood, 50-0.
