Q:With so many choices, how do I choose the right Medicare Advantage plan for me?

A:Medicare Advantage plans (Medicare Part C) are an alternative way to get your Medicare benefits. Advantage Plans are administered by private insurance companies who are required to provide the same level of coverage offered by Original Medicare. No two plans are exactly the same, so you need to compare them to find the best plan for you.

Here are a few of important points to consider:

The Network

Look at the provider network to learn which hospitals, doctors, specialists and other facilities are in the plan’s network. Medicare Advantage plans usually require you to use their network providers. If you go to a provider who is not in your plan’s network, your services may not be covered, or your costs may be higher.

Out of pocket cost

Some Advantage plans are offered at zero monthly premiums while others charge a monthly premium in addition to what you pay for Medicare Part B. When you total up your out of pocket costs, include the annual deductible and copays in addition to your monthly premiums.

Prescriptions

Prescription coverage (Part D) is included with many Medicare Advantage plans. Find out if your prescriptions are included in the plan’s formulary. Look at what tier your prescriptions are in and the cost of each tier.

Are you a snowbird or a frequent traveler?

If you travel a lot or split your time living in different locations throughout the year it will be important to make sure your Advantage plan travels with you. Some plans only cover you for emergency services outside the plan’s service area.

Extra Benefits

A number of Medicare Advantage plans provide attractive extra benefits. These may include fitness club memberships, transportation to doctor appointments, allowance for over-the-counter medications, inhome and personal safety equipment and more. Do not let the extra benefits sway your decision unless you are confident you will use them.
