A Mentor man accused of shooting another man many times in a parking lot has been arraigned in court.

The Mentor man accused of shooting another man multiple times in a parking lot has been arraigned on charges in Geauga County Common Pleas Court.

Stephen Corey, 30, was arraigned Aug. 31 on charges of attempted aggravated murder (an unclassified felony), first-degree felony attempted murder, two counts of seconddegree felony felonious assault and thirddegree felony tampering with evidence. The arraignment comes a week after Corey was indicted by a Geauga County grand jury.

The charges stem from a July 18 incident outside Chardon Tavern and Grill at 405 Water St. Chardon police and fire departments were called to the scene shortly before 2 a.m. Upon arrival, first-responders found a 35-year-old male victim, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, according to a Chardon police news release.

Geauga County Common Pleas Court Judge David M. Ondrey at the arraignment hearing set Corey’s bond at $150,000 with a 10 percent option, according to court records.

If Corey posts bond, he is not to have contact with the victim, including family and his place of employment or the Chardon Tavern. He will also be required to wear a GPS monitoring device.

Following the shooting, the victim was transported to University Hospital Geauga Medical Center by the Chardon Fire Department. He was later transferred by medical helicopter to University Hospitals in Cleveland.

The alleged suspect — Corey — fled the scene of the shooting in a vehicle and was apprehended by police a short distance from the scene, shortly after the shooting.

Geauga County Prosecutor James R. Flaiz said Aug. 25 that the victim was critically injured in the shooting but is recovering.

Corey’s attempted aggravated murder, attempted murder and felonious assault charges also carry firearm specifications that carry three-year mandatory prison sentences, if found guilty.

Those same charges also carry another specification that, if found guilty, he must forfeit the alleged weapon used in the incident: a Glock 17 9mm handgun.

The case has been assigned to Geauga County Common Pleas Court Judge Carolyn J. Paschke.

No court dates have yet been set, according to court records.
