Fisher Award watch list is out after Week 1

See what area players made this week’s list as candidates for the Fisher Award, given to The News-Herald high school football player of the year.

The Tony Fisher Award goes to The News-Herald’s football player of the year.

It is named after the legendary running back from Euclid, who went on to be named Ohio’s Mr. Football, then played at the University of Notre Dame and then the NFL.

The candidates on this list, shown in alphabetic­al order, can and will change on a weekly basis based on each week’s performanc­e.

Jaylen Anderson, Perry:

Did not play in the Pirates’ 50-0 win over Edgewood.

Riley Coughlin, Mentor:

Carried 15 times for 96 yards and two touchdowns in the Cardinals’ 37-19 win over Medina.

Chase Fortkamp, Wickliffe: Carried 19 times for 203 yards and three touchdowns in the Blue Devils’ 41-0 win over Lutheran West.

Billy Guzzo, Mayfield: The Wildcats did not have a game in Week 1.

Michael Huss, Mayfield: The Wildcats did not have a game in Week 1.

Ian Kipp, Mentor: Completed 18 of 38 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns in the Cardinals’ 37-19 win over Medina.

Dom Lulow, Riverside: Ran for 63 yards and two touchdowns, and also completed 10 of 21 passes for 122 yards and a score in the Beavers’ 30-0 win over South.

Joe Malchesky, Lake

Catholic: Ran for 80 yards and passed for 98 yards and a touchdown in the Cougars’ 31-15 loss to Kirtland. Austin McCourt, Madison: Carried 22 times for 82 yards in the Blue Streaks’ 17-14 overtime loss to Geneva.

Brad McKeon, Madison: Ran for 16 yards and a touchdown, and also caught six passes for 95 yards and a score in the Blue Streaks’ 17-14 overtime loss to Geneva.

James Pettyjohn, Chardon: Ran for 179 yards and three touchdowns in the Hilltopper­s’ 42-7 win over North.

Brayden Richards, Perry: Completed 11 of 14 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns in the Pirates 50-0 win over Edgewood. Ira Sampson, South: Carried 15 times for 37 yards in the Rebels’ 30-0 loss to Riverside.

Ron Schultz, Benedictin­e: Ran for 43 yards and also completed 8 of 12 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns in the Bengals’ 24-17 win over Warren Harding. A.J. Shorts, Brush: Ran for two touchdowns and threw for another score in the Arcs’ 35-28 win over Lakewood.

Mason Sullivan, Kirtland: Ran for 111 yards and a touchdown in the Hornets’ 31-15 win over Lake Catholic.

Charlie Taylor, Geneva: Carried 18 times for 107 yards in the Eagles’ 17-14 overtime win over Madison.
