The following student has been named to the dean’s list at Bates College for the winter semester ending in April 2020. This is a distinctio­n earned by students whose cumulative grade point average is 3.8 or higher. Hale Murch of Kirtland, the child of Creighton B. Murch and Janice A. Smith of Kirtland, is a 2018 graduate of Laurel School. They are majoring in theater and history at Bates.

Baldwin Wallace University

Emily Lesco of Wickliffe completed a personaliz­ed research project this summer through the Baldwin Wallace University Summer Scholars program. Lesco, a graduate of Wickliffe High School majoring in public health, was one of six students selected for the elite experience. With the mentorship of Dr. Laura Hopkins, Lesco conducted research on improving child food security during windows of risk through a nutritiona­l and comparativ­e analysis of Buddy Box program meals and snacks.

Coordinate­d by BW’s Undergradu­ate Research and Creative Studies, the 10-week program provides a funded opportunit­y for BW students to pursue projects of their own design, which usually includes seminars, field trips and access to other scholars within and beyond the University.

Due to COVID-19, this year’s scholars had to adapt their original plans.

Summer Scholars is one of many opportunit­ies URCS offers, enabling partnershi­ps between students and professors for a creative, handson approach to learning. Summer Scholars are awarded a $3,500 stipend, free summer housing and up to $500 to pay for supplies, services and/ or travel to support their research. Faculty mentors work closely to challenge, guide and support student researcher­s.

University of Alabama

Macie M. Biermann of Chagrin Falls was named to The University of Alabama dean’s list for summer 2020.

The UA dean’s and president’s lists recognize full-time undergradu­ate students.

Colgate University

Members of the Class of 2020 were honored in a virtual ceremony at Colgate University’s 199th Commenceme­nt.

Among the graduates were:

Eliza Judson, a graduate of Hathaway Brown School, of Cleveland.

Alexander Mathews, a graduate of Mentor High School, of Mentor.
