High school football roundup
Geneva coach Chip Sorber challenged his team Oct. 16 — and the Eagles responded. Down, 19-7, at halftime to visiting Hubbard in a Division III, Region 9 game, Sorber pointed out the pending finality of the moment.
Spurred on by their coach’s words, the Eagles went on to beat Hubbard, 22-19. With the win, Geneva (7-1) advances to play Chardon next week at Chardon’s Memorial Field. “I told them, ‘I didn’t schedule a Week 9 game. If we lose tonight, we’re done,’” Sorber said. “I told them, ‘Your career could end tonight if we don’t start playing like a team.’” Geneva got back into the game in the third when Ben Scibona ran for a one-yard touchdown run to make it 19-14.
With the game on the line, Geneva then went on a scoring drive in the fourth to win it. Scibona hit Cole Smith on a 25-yard pass play on thirdand-long to get the Eagles inside the 10-yard line. Then with 2-plus minutes to go, Charlie Taylor bulled in for the go-ahead score.
“It was a wild one, that’s for sure,” Sorber said. “I’d have to say it’s one of the biggest wins in program history. We’ve never been to the second round of the playoffs before. We’re happy with how we’re playing right now.”
