Fisher watch list update is unveiled after Week 8

John Kampf returns with an update for the quest for the Tony Fisher award, given to The News-Herald’s high school football player of the year. Check out where your favorites stand.

The Tony Fisher Award goes to The News-Herald’s football player of the year.

It is named after the legendary running back from Euclid, who went on to be named Ohio’s Mr. Football, then played at Notre Dame and went on to play in the NFL.

The candidates on this list, shown in alphabetic­al order, can and will change on a weekly basis based on each week’s performanc­e:

Jaylen Anderson, Perry: Carried 13 times for 79 yards and a touchdown, and also caught two passes for 44 yards, in the Pirates’ 55-28 loss to CVCA. For the season, he has run for 875 yards, caught nine passes for 124 yards and scored 15 touchdowns. He also has four tackles, 1 1⁄2 sacks and a forced fumble on defense. Vince Ferrante, Chardon: Had 10 tackles, four TFLs and two pass breakups in the Hilltopper­s’ 49-14 win over Warren Howland. For the season, he has 56 tackles, four sacks, 18 TFLs, five pass breakups and an intercepti­on.

Chase Fortkamp, Wickliffe: Carried 17 times for 203 yards and four touchdowns in the Blue Devils’ 41-0 win over Smithville. He also had 14 tackles and a TFL in the game. For the season, he has run for 1,273 yards and scored 23 touchdowns. Defensivel­y he has 75 tackles, three TFLs, two sacks, an intercepti­on, a blocked field goal, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. Michael Huss, Mayfield: Ran for three touchdowns and threw for 101 yards in the Wildcats’ 55-31 win over Nordonia. For the season, he has thrown for 700 yards and nine touchdowns and run for 337 yards and four touchdowns.

Ian Kipp, Mentor: Completed 7 of 16 passes for 110 yards, and also ran for 92 yards and a score, in the Cardinals’ 31-14 win over Stow-Munroe Falls. For the season, he has thrown for 1,564 yards and 20 touchdowns and run for 293 yards and four scores.

Dom Lulow, Riverside: Completed 10 of 19 passes for 126 yards in the Beavers’ 39-28 win over Boardman. For the season, he has thrown for 1,365 yards and 16 touchdowns and run for 282 yards and two scores.

Joe Malchesky, Lake Catholic: Carried 17 times for 184 yards and a touchdown, and also threw for 70 yards and two touchdowns, in the

Cougars’ 41-0 win over Canton South. For the season, he has run for 905 yards and eight touchdowns and passed for 526 yards and seven scores. Defensivel­y, he has 33 tackles, two intercepti­ons and six pass breakups.

James Pettyjohn, Chardon: Ran for 121 yards and a touchdown in the Hilltopper­s’ 49-14 win over Warren Howland. For the season, he has run for 863 yards and 14 touchdowns and caught five passes for 107 yards and a touchdown.

Ron Schultz, Benedictin­e: Was injured and did not play in the Bengals’ 35-0 win over South. For the season, he has thrown for 855 yards and seven touchdowns.

Mason Sullivan, Kirtland: Carried nine times for 59 yards in the Hornets’ 42-0 win over Akron Manchester. For the season, he has run for 551 yards and six touchdowns to go with 26 tackles and four TFLs on defense.

Charlie Taylor, Geneva: Carried 10 times for 90 yards and two touchdowns in the Eagles’ 22-19 win over Hubbard. For the season, he has run for 942 yards and 15 touchdowns, caught five passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. Defensivel­y, he has 43 tackles, two sacks and six TFLs.
