Mentor game pushed to Oct. 24 by storms

If it’s not one thing, it’s another in 2020.

The Division I regional semifinal scheduled to be played Oct. 23 at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium between Brunswick and Mentor was postponed to Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. due to storms rolling through the area.

For Mentor coach Matt Gray and his Cardinals, it’s just another adjustment to make in a season that’s been full of them.

“It’s one of those types of situations that we learned long ago in 2020 at the start of this, at the onset, that we’ve got to adjust to it and adapt to it,” Gray said. “Our kids have handled it really well. They didn’t bat an eye.”

Mentor (7-1) shut out Brunswick (6-2), 38-0, back on Sept. 18. Since then, the Blue Devils have won four straight, knocking off Strongsville, Garfield Heights, Massillon Jackson and Canton McKinley.

“Tough, hard-nosed physical football team,” Gray said regarding Brunswick. “They have won the turnover battle (in recent games), and they’re playing really well right now.

“So we’ve got to play our best.”

The Cardinals will have

another adjustment to make — going from a summer-like day of temperatures in the 70s to a much chillier afternoon in the low to mid-40s.

“It’s 2020, things are

tough, and we’ll find a way to adjust to it,” Gray said of the drastic weather change. “We’re going to find a way to get better, and to win a football game.”

If Mentor is able to get by Brunswick again, up next will be another familiar foe: Either fellow GCC member Medina or perennial nonconference rival St. Ignatius.

“I’m very pleased with where we’re at,” Gray said. “I think we’re getting better every week, and I love our kids’ mentality and mindset. They’re preparing the

right way, they’re practicing the right way, and on Friday nights they’re playing extremely hard. I think when we do that we’re a very good football team.”
