Fairport Senior Center receives donations
Painesville Township trustees have approved donations to the Fairport Senior Center in the amount of $3,500 for 2020 and another $3,500 for 2021.
The center has over 1,800 members and includes residents from Painesville and Painesville Township.
Its mission is to improve the lives of adults 55 and older, through providing opportunities for social interaction, programs, education, volunteering, and community support.
Although residents and non-residents who use the facilities throughout the year are encouraged to become members at an annual cost of $12 per year, the center reached out to Painesville Township for additional funds in the form of donations.
“We would like to purchase another NuStep machine in our exercise room as that is the most used piece of equipment,” said Chris Yano, the center’s director for 21 years.
“This machine is good for people with knee and hip problems and also used after rehab from knee replacement surgery.”
The most popular class is the arthritis class, and before the pandemic, it was offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with an average 45 people, Yano explained.
“When we do open again we will offer this class twice per day so that it’s not as crowded,” Yano said. “We do not charge for this class as we have had volunteers offer to lead these classes.” Meanwhile, the Lake County General Health District recently approved allowing the center to open the workout room with limited occupancy. That is expected to happen soon, Yano said.
“Our seniors are served in a very safe and clean facility, and that makes them more comfortable coming to the center,” Yano said.
