Police: Euclid seeing uptick in carjackings

- Staff report

According to Euclid police, between May 5 and Feb. 8, there were 16 armed carjackings in the city.

Euclid has seen an uptick in carjackings in recent days with two attempted carjackings occurring Feb. 9, according to Euclid police.

The department stated that victims have described similar suspects and circumstances.

The victims were alone and just outside of their vehicles, according to the department.

The victims stated the suspect car was a sedan, gray or dark in color.

The vehicle either parks nearby or parks to block the victim’s car and the suspects get out and allegedly approach, brandishing handguns.

Victims stated the suspect car had two or three Black men inside.

The incidents occurred in the evening, but also at 1 a.m. and 3 a.m., the department stated.

“The suspects seem to be driving around looking for individuals to carjack, especially along Lake

Shore Boulevard but these carjackings have occurred elsewhere,” the department stated.

The department stated that “If you feel a vehicle with more than one person inside is following you or tries to block your vehicle, do not get out of your car, drive someplace safe and call Euclid Police at 216-731-1234. If it is an emergency, call 911.”

According to Euclid police, between May 5 and Feb. 8, there were 16 armed carjackings in the city.

Only one occurred at a business, the others were committed outside a home or apartment complex. In 13 of the 16 cases, the victim was alone.

“What we need to do is be more cognizant of our surroundings — use situational awareness as the crime prevention measure,” police stated. “Is someone strange walking down your street when you pull into your driveway? Is there an unknown car following you home or stopped outside your home?”
