Kaayla Chones Award watch list

The Kaayla Chones Award goes to The NewsHerald’s girls basketball player of the year. It is named after the former All-Ohioan who starred at North and went on to play at North Carolina State and then in the WNBA.

The award will be presented following the season. This watch list includes players who are in the running for the award. It can and will change as the season progresses.

In alphabetic­al order are:

Abby Carter, North: The senior guard and Akron University signee is averaging 17.0 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.3 steals, with 31 3-pointers made.

Catara DeJarnette, Kenston: The junior point guard is averaging 20.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.9 steals, 3.6 assists with 32 3-pointers.

Avril Drew, North: The senior guard is averaging 18.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, with 14 3-pointers made.

Lydia Gattozzi, Beaumont: The senor guard and Canisius signee is averaging 17.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.3 steals and 0.8 blocks per game.

Madyson Hacking, Perry: The Pirates’ senior guard is averaging 17.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.7 steals and 3.3 assists, with 23 3-pointers made.

Athena Hocevar, West Geauga: The senior forward and Youngstown State signee is averaging 13.5 points, 3.7 steals, 3.6 assists and one block per game.

Aislyn Hurst, Cornerston­e: The Patriots’ senior guard is averaging 15.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.4 steals per game, with 30 3-pointers made.

Elle Infalvi, Perry: The Pirates’ senior guard is averaging 14.6 points, 2.5 assists, 2.3 steals, and an area-leading 62 3-pointers.

Kara McFadden, Fairport: The sophomore guard is averaging 20.4 points, 4.2 assists and 2.8 steals, with 59 3-pointers.

Riley Montagner, Madison: A junior guard/forward for the Blue Streaks, she is averaging 18.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.3 steals with 22 3-pointers.

Tai Roberts, Andrews Osborne: A junior guard for the Phoenix, she is averaging 20.2 points, 6.9 steals, 5.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game.

Riley Stopp, Cornerston­e: The senior guard/ forward for the Patriots, an Ursuline College signee, is averaging 17.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.1 blocks per game, with 18 3-pointers made.

Kayla White, Brush: The senior guard is averaging 13.7 points, 4.1 assists and 3.0 steals per game.

Ally Ziegler, Beaumont: A senior forward for the Blue Streaks and a Wheeling University signee, she is averaging 12.4 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, 1.4 steals and 1.1 blocks per game.
