University Hospitals announced Feb. 19 that the facility currently under construction on the campus of UH Avon Health Center, near the intersection of Detroit Road and Route 83, will become the newest UH Seidman Cancer Center, according to a news release.

When it opens to patients in September 2021, UH Seidman Cancer Center at UH Avon Health Center will ensure that residents of Lorain County have access to the most comprehensive and patient-centered cancer services, close to home, the release said.

The state-of-the-art facility will become the Lorain County hub for the UH Seidman Cancer Center.

UH Seidman Cancer Center is part of the National Cancer Institute-designated Case Comprehensive Cancer Center at Case Western Reserve University, one of just 51 comprehensive cancer centers in the country.

The $31 million, 35,000-square-foot, twofloor facility will offer both radiation oncology and medical oncology.

Patients who receive care there will benefit from services at the adjacent UH Avon Health Center, including diagnostic imaging, plus laboratory services, urgent care and a medically based fitness center, officials said.

The new site will employ 40 caregivers.

“Our intent was to create a brand new, state-of-theart facility, which will provide the residents of Lorain County and surrounding communities leading-edge cancer care close to home,” said Dr. Ted Teknos, president of UH Seidman Cancer Center, in the release. “In addition to medical and radiation oncology services, patients will have access to a vast array of clinical trials, as well as social work, financial counseling and a myriad of other supportive services.”
