North edges Mentor
Rangers score twice in fifth to back starter Metz
When two teams in the Top of the Crop match up, you can expect it’s going to be a good game. That was the case when Mentor and North matched up in a nonconference clash on April 3.
Cole Hemming of Mentor and North’s Logan Metz had solid outings, as the pair kept the other team scoreless through four innings.
Mentor was the first to get on the board in the top of the fifth inning, but North responded and went on to win the game, 2-1. The win moves the Rangers to 5-0, while the Cardinals fall to 1-1.
North has become accustomed to low-scoring affairs. The Rangers have allowed more than two runs once in their first five games. Coach Kyle Stahlberg said they have put a lot of work into their defense.
“We try to roll with what we’ve been working on at practice and play our type of game,” said Stahlberg.
Quarterback Chris Brimm threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another score as Notre Dame College walloped Alderson Broaddus, 69-10, in the Falcons’ first road game of the season.
NDC (3-0) scored 59 unanswered points from the middle of the first quarter through early in the third quarter. The Falcons held A-B to six first downs and 171 yards of offense.
Brimm was 14 of 21 for 206 yards. Tabyus Taylor rushed for 175 yards and two TDs on 18 carries. Devanaire Conliffe (South) caught two passes for 50 yards, including a 32-yard TD.
NDC’s next scheduled game is April 10 at Wheeling.
Case falls in exhibition
Visiting Case Western Reserve fell to Denison, 14-6, in an exhibition that featured one half of play.
Brandon Callow kicked two field goals to account for the Spartans’ scoring.
