Attack leaves 2 cops with concussions, broken jaw

-

COLUMBUS » A suspect’s attack against two Columbus police officers left one officer with a broken jaw and the other with a concussion, authorities announced Friday.

Officers Andrew Mott and Samuel Clanin were recovering from their injuries Friday, according to a tweet by the Columbus Division of Police.

Body camera footage posted by police shows an assault taking place moments after the two officers responded to a call about a man threatening people with a knife outside Faith Mission, a downtown homeless shelter.

The video shows the suspect, Noah Andrews, punch Mott within seconds of him exiting a police van. Andrews then slammed Clanin against a police car, officials said. The video then shows Mott responding by tasering Andrews after he falls on the ground, according to the video.

The attack left Mott with a broken jaw in two places, requiring surgery, and Clanin with a concussion. Police said Andrews, who wasn’t injured, was charged with assault on a police officer.

The attack comes amid heightened tensions between Columbus police and the community.

A number of protesters and police clashed Tuesday night outside the division’s headquarters. The demonstrators were protesting the killing of Miles Jackson, who died after he and police faced a standoff at a Columbus-area hospital Monday.

Images show man shot by Cleveland officer had a gun

CLEVELAND » Cleveland has released body camera footage showing an officer fatally shooting a man who had pulled a gun from his waistband after a short foot chase.

The shooting occurred Thursday morning on the city’s east side. The man killed has been identified as Innes Lee Jr., 25, of Cleveland. The Cleveland homicide unit issued a murder warrant for Lee in October.

Frame grabs from the video released Thursday evening clearly show a gun in Lee’s hand when he was shot.

Police were called to the neighborhood where Lee was killed around 4 a.m. Thursday after receiving a call about a man causing trouble. Lee was not located at the time, authorities said.

Officers returned around four hours later and spotted Lee. The body camera video shows Lee running into a backyard surrounded by a high fence. The officer orders Lee to stop, and then tells him, “Drop, do not reach for (expletive)” as Lee pulls a gun from his waistband, prompting the officer to fire four rounds, the video shows.

The name of the officer, a 10-year veteran, has not been released by police officials.

Human trafficking sting in Ohio results in 93 arrests

COLUMBUS » A two-day human trafficking sting staged at hotels across central Ohio resulted in nearly 100 arrests, the state attorney general’s office announced Friday.

The sting also marked the first time that people trying to buy sex were charged with engaging in prostitution under a new law that took effect Monday.

Authorities said 93 people were arrested during the “Operations 614” sting staged Wednesday and Thursday in Columbus and its surrounding suburbs. It was conducted in partnership with federal, state and local law enforcement, and officials said those arrested included a registered sex offender on parole and those seeking sex with juveniles.

Besides targeting people seeking out prostitutes, the sting was an effort to help identify human trafficking victims and get them connected to services. Fifty-three victims were identified during the two-day operation.
