Lake County Fair needs a queen

Applications are now being accepted for the 2021 Lake County Fair Queen.

The contest will be open to young ladies ages 16 to 19. Although the contest is not affiliated with the 4-H program, entrants must be a member of 4-H, Junior Fair Board, or FFA and live in Lake County, according to a news release.

Applications, rules and regulations and summary will be available in the Fair Office, 1301 Mentor Ave. in Painesville, or online at www.lakecountyfair.org. Deadline for submitting applications is May 13.

This is not a beauty contest. Applicants will be judged on personality, poise, community service and service to their organization, the release stated.

Judging will be held on June 12 and crowning will take place July 11.

The queen will reign over the fair this year and participate in the Ohio State Fair Queen contest held in Columbus in January.

Residents can learn victim avoidance

The dates for the first class in Wickliffe’s “Neighbors Protecting Neighbors” program have been announced.

“Victim Avoidance” will focus on situational awareness, typical criminal activity in Wickliffe, and how to reduce those crimes, according to Mayor and Safety Director John Barbish.

This class is appropriate for the whole family, said Barbish who noted he will have his wife and 12-yearold son with him at one of the classes.

The class will be taught by Wickliffe resident Trevor Durkalski, who has extensive military, security, and firearms training.

In late May, Barbish is planning programs for bleed control and CPR, and basic self-defense after that.

These classes, which are free for Wickliffe residents, will all be at the community center and will last roughly 1 hour. Classes will be limited to 10 to 12 people so there will be room for social distancing.

Classes are 6:30 p.m. on April 22 and 29 and May 6; and 9:30 a.m. on May 1 and 8.
