Q: I’m constantly worrying about getting sick and I just can’t stop. Now it’s starting to affect how I live my life, what should I do?

A: This is such a common issue, so please know you’re not alone. One way to cope with anxiety is to make sure that you have activities and time set aside to take care of yourself and reduce stress by implementing self-care. Whether it is a specific scent that relaxes you, or just taking thirty minutes out of your day to work for a new hobby, the time spent being gentle and kind with yourself through the use of self-care can have a great positive effect on your mental and physical wellbeing. However, the anxiety we feel may get worse and create ruminating thoughts.

Some options to cope with ruminating thoughts include putting a cold washcloth on the back of your neck, engaging in aerobic exercise for twenty minutes, and doing paced breathing. These options are directed at increasing activity within your parasympathetic nervous system, which increases your ability to regulate your emotions and decreases emotional arousal. However, if you are struggling with day to day tasks because of your racing thoughts or anxiety, it is definitely time to speak with a professional. Therapy is a wonderful and safe place to learn effective coping skills to handle and overcome your anxiety. Here at PBHS, I work with a caring team of professionals to offer skillsbased therapy. We specialize in individual therapy, medication management services, and IOP programs and would be happy to speak to you further if anxiety is hindering your life.
