Sentencing date set for man convicted of bar shooting
Stephen Corey will be sentenced Sept. 27
A Mentor man found guilty of all but one charge stemming from a July 2020 Chardon bar shooting will be sentenced in late September, court records show.
A Geauga County jury on July 20 found 31-year-old Stephen Corey guilty of first-degree felony attempted murder, two counts of second-degree felony felonious assault and third-degree felony tampering with evidence. Corey was found not guilty of first-degree felony attempted aggravated murder.
A sentencing date was not immediately set following the verdict.
The date is now set for Sept. 27. Corey was on trial for a shooting on July 18, 2020, outside of Chardon Tavern and Grill. The Chardon police and fire departments responded to the scene just before 2 a.m. to the business, where they found a 35-yearold man who sustained multiple gunshot wounds, according to the police department.
The victim was transported to University Hospital Geauga Medical Center by the Chardon Fire Department. He was later transferred by medical helicopter to University Hospitals in Cleveland, according to Chardon police.
Chardon police said that Corey fled the scene following the shooting. He was apprehended a short distance from the scene.
Corey will be sentenced by Geauga County Common Pleas Court Judge Carolyn J. Paschke.
Following the verdict, Geauga County Prosecutor James Flaiz said he was pleased with the outcome.
“Changes to the law over the past several years by the General Assembly have made alleged selfdefense cases very difficult for prosecutors,” Flaiz said. “Fortunately, due to the outstanding work of the Chardon Police Department, Geauga County Sheriff’s Office and (Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation), we were able to obtain a conviction.”
