Mayfield>>Wildcats
Just the facts
Conference: WRC
OHSAA: Division II, Region 5
Coach: Ross Bandiera, sixth year (31-20) 2020: 5-2

Home field: Wildcat Park
Outlook
The Wildcats will field one of their youngest teams in years, with only eight returning letterwinners, three returning starters on defense and one (kicker Austin Ziance) on offense. But the upside of this team is huge. Senior QB Devin Sperling is an exceptional QB who was ‘stuck’ behind decorated starter Michael Huss. The offensive skill, highlighted by fleet-footed Nick Biega, can make plays in space. and the offensive line, featuring three up-andcoming sophomores, is big. The middle of the defense is Mayfield’s strength. Nose tackle Matt Snider and LB Grant Woods are big-time playmakers. Mayfield has always prided itself on tough, hard-nosed defense. This year will be no different. There are questions about depth and experience, but that comes with any young team. This team will grow fast as the season progresses.
Player to watch
Matt Snider is an absolute bull in the middle. The latest of dominating defensive linemen — most recently being Marco Tramontano
— Snider has the size and strength to dominate the trenches. It’ll be tough for offensive lines to move
Snider if they want to run up the middle.
Underclassman to watch: Mikey Traczyk is a 6-1, 200-pound linebacker who is physical. He has great balance, thanks in part to his wrestling background, and he has a nasty demeanor that you want in a linebacker.
Bottom line
IF: Mayfield’s young offensive players grow up quickly and play like veterans. THEN: Mayfield will be in the thick of the WRC race again.
