- By John Kampf JKampf@news-herald.com

Perry travels to Kenston for a marquee matchup. John Kampf has a preview of that game and other top encounters involving area teams. Plus, the Way We See ’Em.

PERRY AT KENSTON

What: Non-conference game

When: 7 p.m., Aug. 27

Where: Bomber Stadium

Records: Perry 1-0, Kenston 1-0

Last week: Perry def. Riverside, 26-6, Kenston def. Chagrin Falls, 35-0

For the record: This nonconference game could be an offensive showcase. Both have the ability to put up big points and fast. … The visiting Pirates dominated Riverside in the opener. The running of sophomore QB Brayden Richards (who scored twice) led Perry’s offense, though Aiden Lefelhoc also ran well. When Perry passes, Jaden Hacking and Javin Richards are dangerous threats. … Kenston got a highlight-reel game from QB Nikko Georgiou (250yards passing four TDs). The Bombers have a quartet of good receivers, and Sean Patrick ran for more than 100 yards in the win over Chagrin Falls. … If Perry can run the ball effectively and keep Georgiou & Co. on the sideline, that would benefit the Pirates. Slowing down Kenston’s offense can be a chore.

TOLEDO CENTRAL CATHOLIC AT BENEDICTINE

What: Non-conference game

When: 7 p.m., Aug. 28

Where: Euclid Community Stadium

Records: Toledo Central Catholic 1-0, Benedictine 1-0

Last week: Benedictine def. Walsh Jesuit, 35-34(2OT), St. Edward def. Toledo Central Catholic, 33-10

For the record: Toledo CC holds a 2-1 lead in the all-time series, the last meeting coming in 2015. … Benedictine pulled out a 35-34overtime win last week, with 423 yards of total offense. Most of the yardage came through the air, where CeeJay Yarboro threw for 331 yards and four touchdowns. Brandon Boyd had 10 catches for 194 yards and a score. On the ground, Duane Jackson ran for 79 yards. … Central Catholic was tied with St. Edward, 3-3, at the half before the Eagles scored 23 points to take control of the game. Josh Watson scored a second-half touchdown for Central, but the Irish’s defense couldn’t come up with the stops. … Both teams gave up a lot of points last week, so finding a way to slow down the opposition might be a point of emphasis in this game.

CHARDON AT AKRON BUCHTEL

What: Non-conference game

When: 1 p.m. Aug. 28

Where: Buchtel Griffin Stadium

Records: Chardon 1-0, Akron Buchtel 1-0

QB Joe Mayfield last week in a 21-9 Pfaff threw for 163yards, win. Can the Griffins’ defense while RB Marty Lenehan ran slow down Chardon’s for 84 yards and two scores. vaunted running attack? … As usual, this will be a high-level game, and likely a precursor to a rematch when the Division I, Region 1 playoffs arrive.

GENEVA AT WEST GEAUGA

What: Non-conference game

When: 7 p.m., Aug. 27

Where: Howell Field

Records: Geneva 1-0, West Geauga 0-1

Last week: Geneva def. Madison, 37-20, Bay def. West Geauga, 24-17

For the record: Both teams had their originally scheduled games canceled, Geneva losing its Collinwood game because Collinwood didn’t have enough players and West G because of a COVID issue at Streetsboro. … These teams will also meet Oct. 18 in a game that counts in the league standings. … Geneva beat Madison last week behind the running of RB Brady Peet and QB Wyatt Fuduric, each of whom topped 100 yards on the ground. Dylan Hamilton is another running threat. .. West G had turnover issues against Bay last week. QB Danny Stewart is a veteran leader who can light up the scoreboard. WR Torry Stazzone has scored a touchdown in 11straight games. The line, with Luca Gasbarrino and Luca Sadler, is big, physical and experienced.

ST. IGNATIUS AT MENTOR

What: Non-conference game

When: 7 p.m., Aug. 27

Where: Jerome T. Osborne Stadium

Last week: Mentor def. Canton McKinley, 49-7,

KIRTLAND AT LUTHERAN WEST

What: Non-Conference game

When: 7 p.m., Aug. 27

Where: Alumni Field, 3850 Linden Road, Rocky River

Records: Kirtland 1-0, Lutheran West 1-0

Last week: Lutheran West def. Fairview, 37-13, Kirtland def. Harvey, 50-6

For the record: The Hornets have now won 42 games in a row after their 50-6win over Harvey in Week 1. Mason Rus ran for 134 yards and a touchdown, and Gage Sullivan caught four touchdown passes. The Hornets run the ball extremely well behind their big and physical offensive line. That ability to run the ball helps open up the passing game — whether it’s Ramon Lescano or Pierce Boyd at QB — for Sullivan to do some damage. … Eddie Lewis ran for 285 yards and four touchdowns to lead Lutheran West to victory in Week 1. Defensively, freshman JoJo Ravennell had 11 tackles. … Both teams will enter this game trying to stop the other team’s running game. Who can do it?

TWINSBURG AT SOUTH

What: Non-conference game

When: 7 p.m., Aug. 27 Where: Harry E. Winters Stadium

Records: South 1-0, Twinsburg 1-0

Last week: South def. NDCL, 44-14, Twinsburg def. Copley, 34-27(OT)

On the airwaves: Spectrum News 1

For the record: What an impressive opener by the Rebels, whose offense looked unstoppable in a 30-point win over NDCL. … Tyrone Singleton ran for 167 yards in the opener for South, and QB Colin Quinlan threw for 177 yards. But on top of that, the South defense was smothering in holding NDCL to 177 total yards. When South plays like that, it’s going to be tough to beat. … Steve Cammack had a big game for Twinsburg in a 34-27 overtime win over Copley, with four catches for 120 yards and a touchdown and a punt return for a touchdown. … The big question/ key in this game is whether Twinsburg — coached by former Lake Catholic coach Mike Bell — can stop or slow down South’s high-powered offense.

VASJ AT HOLY NAME

What: Non-conference game

When: 7 p.m., Aug. 28

Where: Serpentini Stadium, 6579Royalton Road, North Royalton

Records: VASJ 1-0, Holy Name 1-0

Last week: VASJ def. CVCA, 44-12, Holy Name, def. Padua, 20-0

For the record: The Vikings haven’t been 2-0 since 2015, but that’s on the table here as VASJ hopes to build on its decisive 44-12 win in Week 1over CVCA. The Vikings used their superior depth on both sides of the ball — as well as a 198-yard passing day from QB Jalen Minter — to beat CVCA. With temperatures expected in the 80s or low 90s this weekend, along with humidity, that depth could be key again this week. … Holy Name’s defense stood out in a 20-0 win over Padua last week. Jayvon Williams threw a touchdown pass to Eric Jones to spark Holy Name’s offense. VASJ’s defense will want to contain Williams and the skill set around him.
