Fisher award watch list unveiled after Week 3

John Kampf has this week’s update on candidates for the Tony Fisher award, presented to The News-Herald’s high school football player of the year, following their performanc­es in Week 3.

The Tony Fisher Award goes to The News-Herald player of the year in football. It is named after the former Ohio Mr. Football recipient, a graduate of Euclid, who went on to star at Notre Dame and play in the NFL.

The Fisher Award watch list can and will change on a weekly basis. This is simply an early sample of players to watch based on their performanc­es last season.

This week’s watch list, in alphabetic­al order, is:

Ryan Baer, North, Sr.: Graded out 97% with 17 pancake blocks in the Rangers’ loss to Lake Catholic. For the season he is at 89% with 33pancakes and zero sacks allowed.

Derell Bedingfiel­d, Benedictin­e, Sr.: In limited action because of the Bengals’ 43-8 win over Cleveland Central Catholic, he had two tackles on defense and two catches for 20 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Boyd, Benedictin­e, Jr.: In limited action because of Benedictin­e’s 43-8win over Cleveland Central Catholic, he did not have a catch.

Rick Coleman Jr., Harvey, Sr.: Carried 12times for 104 yards and two touchdowns, completed two passes for 26 yards and also returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown in the Red Raiders’ 42-0win over Wickliffe.

Jaxon French, Lake Catholic, Sr.: Completed 20 of 27 passes for 250yards and two touchdowns, and also carried nine times for 39yards, in the Cougars’ 28-7win over North. Nikko Georgiou, Kenston, Jr.: Completed 7of 16passes for 106 yards and also carried eight times for 66yards and three touchdowns in the Bombers’ 35-23 win over NDCL.

Alex Henry, Chardon: Ran for 87 yards and three touchdowns, and also threw for 64yards, in the Hilltopper­s’ 36-27win over Youngstown Ursuline.

Dominic Johnson, Hawken, Jr.: Carried 13times for 30 yards in the Hawks’ 35-3loss to Gilmour.

Andy Kavcic, Gilmour, So.: Carried 24times for 152 yards and two touchdowns, and completed 7of 11passes for 85yards and a score, in the Lancers’ 35-3win over Hawken.

Ryan Miller, Kenston, Sr.: Played in the Bombers’ 3523win over NDCL, but was injured and did not return.

Ty Howard, VASJ, Sr.: Scored two touchdowns and started on defense in the Vikings’ 4926win over Lakeside. Terrence Robinson II, Hawken: Completed 9of 19 passes for 96yards in the Hawks’ 35-3loss to Gilmour. Tanelle Rose, Brush, So.: Carried 18times for 200yards and three touchdowns in the Arcs’ 21-18 win over Sylvania Southview.

Mason Rus, Kirtland, Sr.: Did not play. Kirtland’s Week 3 game against Westinghou­se Academy (Pa.) was canceled. Ira Sampson, South, Sr.: Scored on two touchdown runs and also started on defense in the Rebels’ 31-14win over Maple Heights.

Tyrone Singleton, South, Jr.: Was injured and did not play in the Rebels’ 31-14win over Maple Heights.

Jacob Snow, Mentor, Jr.: Completed 7of 12passes for 94 yards and a touchdown in the Cardinals’ 47-7loss to St. Edward, but was injured in the second quarter and did not return.

Gage Sullivan, Kirtland, Sr.: Did not play. Kirtland’s Week 3game against Westinghou­se Academy (Pa.) was canceled. Danny Stewart, West Geauga, Sr.: Completed 10 of 17passes for 97yards and a touchdown, and ran for 40 yards, in the Wolverines’ 43-0 win over Parma.

Curtis Thomas, North, Jr.: Caught three passes for 40 yards and also had four tackles on defense in the Rangers’ loss to Lake Catholic. CeejayYarb­oro, Benedictin­e, Sr.: Completed two of three passes for 18yards and a touchdown in the Bengals’ 43-8win over Cleveland Central Catholic.
