Carr, Tager top postseason scoring

All it took was one drive for Chardon’s senior running back Sean Carr to make history.

Carr came into the Hilltoppers’ matchup against West Holmes in a Division III state semifinal tied with James Pettyjohn on the all-time postseason points list with 78 points.

Carr capped the first drive with a three-yard touchdown run to take sole possession of first place with 84 points. But he wasn’t done yet.

Three more rushing touchdowns and a twopoint conversion made it 104 points scored in the postseason.

Carr is happy to have the honor, but knows that the job isn’t done yet.

“It’s such a great program with so many great players,” Carr said. “It’s an honor to take that title and to be able to keep it going because there’s another big game to win.”

With the run-heavy Hilltopper offense, Carr sees a lot of touches but also shares with the rest of the running backs plus quarterback Alex Henry.

“I love that the coaches trust me to give me the ball down in the red zone,” Carr said. “It’s a whole unit thing. We trust our offensive line to move people, and while we’re not breaking long runs, we’re demoralizing and take the soul out of the other team when we drive down there like that.”

Carr wasn’t the only player to move up the alltime postseason scoring list, as his teammate Nate Tager followed suit. The senior kicker came into the contest with 76 points in the postseason and had a good opportunity to close in on the mark early.

But he missed his first kick of the evening after Carr’s first touchdown, and his second one hit off the upright. Tagger settled into his zone and made his next three chances to make it 79 all-time postseason points to take sole possession of second place. Tager knew he had to get back in his rhythm that he had been all season, where he made 68 of his attempts.

“The first two, I wasn’t really focused enough,” Tager said. “I needed to reset my mind and get my mind right and keep myself warm. My coach always tells me to forget about it, and I found what worked for me tonight.”
