Geauga Collection Facility to have grand opening

-

The Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District announced a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Geauga Collection Facility in Chardon will take place at 10 a.m., June 10.

The new facility located at 12685 Merritt Road will allow residents of Geauga and Trumbull counties to responsibly dispose of electronics, appliances and household hazardous waste year-round, according to a news release.

There are many household items that should not be disposed of in landfills as electronics can contain hazardous substances like lead, mercury and other chemicals. Also, appliances with Freon, typically found in air conditioners, refrigerators, etc. are regulated by the EPA and cannot be disposed of in landfills.

In addition, household hazardous waste, such as oils, gasoline, household cleaners, chemicals, etc. are not accepted by curbside waste haulers and must be disposed of separately.

“This new facility accepts all of these items on a weekly basis throughout the entire year, Director Jennifer Jones stated in the release. “Residents no longer have to wait for a one-day event in Geauga County or drive to Warren to dispose of these items properly.”

The facility opens June 2 with preregistrations required to control traffic and reduce wait times. Residents can visit www.tinyurl. com/Geauga-Facility or call the district to preregister.

The $1.4 million project was awarded to Cavanaugh Building Corporation. Funding for the building was provided from fees already collected through waste disposal contracts with landfills and transfer stations, the release stated.
