What to look for: The Class of 2022, so to speak, for The News-Herald coverage area in Division III will be comprised of two student-athletes, both in field events. Cardinal’s Karalyn Rutkowski encouraged by clearing 5-4to win high jump at the Massillon Perry Regional. The senior showing 5-2ability in the regular season and hitting 5-4 here should put her in good stead for the podium. Contending for the duration with returning state champion Mallory Mullen of Springfield Catholic Central and her deep 5-7 and above ability is asking a lot. So another 5-4, maybe more, and a solid top five would be a nice way to close her career.

Gilmour’s C.J. Johnson has the combined honor and misfortune of being amid one of the best D-III boys throwing years anyone has ever seen. The senior nailed down a 161-7in discus at Massillon Perry, which astoundingly only got sixth and the last at-large berth for state. He is seeded 10th here. With the Morlock brothers from Norwayne, McDonald’s Ryan Henry and Dante Mediati and Columbus Grove’s Tadd Koch all 170plus coming in, seeing Johnson go, say, 165 and make the podium would be a major accomplishment.
