William “Bill” Harrison Glime III
It with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of William “Bill” Harrison Glime III on the morning of June 12th, 2022 due to complications during emergency heart surgery. As much as Bill was humble and private with his long list of accomplishments and passion projects, we want to take a moment to honor and recognize a kind and most decent man. Bill grew up in Michigan, a lover of family, friends, dirt
bikes, and hockey. He was born into a close knit family with twin brothers, Jeff Glime (Candy) and Gene Glime born just 18 months after Bill. There is a long history of the collective adventures and shenanigans of the Glime boys from childhood through more recent times, with stories told around the bonfire in Pellston lasting long into the night. Bill later attended Michigan State University, where he met Jennifer (nee Mattavi). They married and began their life together, navigating graduate school, careers, and eventually family for 26 married years. It is through the lens of family that Bill’s greatest accomplishments and source of pride can be found. To Bill, the most important thing was family. Time spent together playing endless games of Monopoly, casual (perhaps a little competitive fitting with Bill Glime’s desire for victory) tennis matches with children Billy, Mandy and Walker, vacations, volunteering in his kids’ activities and shared family time with extended family including his nieces and nephew, all took center stage in his life. He was a committed and caring son to his mother, Eleanor Glime (nee Hall) and to his father, Bill Glime (who preceded him in death). He was above all an active husband and father, and through his example, the life lessons of hard work and integrity have been passed down to his children.
Bill earned his masters and PhD in Material Science & Engineering and had a 24-year career with Swagelok Company in Solon, Ohio progressing to his most recent role of Principal Scientist. He was well regarded by customers and peers in the Semiconductor market because of his drive and passion to solve its unique fluid system challenges. His innovative spirit and technical leadership led to many new products and processes for Swagelok. Bill is named on 26 issued patents and 10 pending applications for Swagelok, as well as an additional eight issued patents outside of the company.
Ever the scientist, Bill’s brought his enthusiasm and brilliant mind to the local school system, where he coached and mentored the robotics “Battle Bots” team. He worked with young minds interested in science and engineering on the design and creation of engineered robots that fought competitor robots. He was able to share that experience with his youngest son, who was a member of two championship teams. Through his volunteered time, Bill sparked interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) in numerous youth from the middle school through high school grades.
In lieu of a funeral the family will be holding a Celebration of Life at a later date.
