Historic site to host ‘Behind the Scenes Day’

James A. Garfield National Historic Site in Mentor it will mark celebratio­n of National Park.

James A. Garfield National Historic Site in Mentor announced it will mark the beginning of the annual celebratio­n of National Park Week with a special “Behind the Scenes Day” from 9 a.m. to noon April 22.

People of all ages are invited to visit and check out areas of the site not usually seen by the public: the Garfield home’s third floor, the windmill, the barn and chicken coop, and more, according to a news release.

This event is free of charge and open to all, and will take place rain or shine. Those attending are asked to wear comfortabl­e walking shoes and to be confident in their ability to climb multiple staircases, the release stated.

National Park Week is held each April to celebrate the role of national parks in American life. All National Park Service sites that charge entrance fees will be fee-free on April 22 to mark the beginning of the week. The Garfield National Historic Site is always fee-free.

“We’re excited to welcome visitors behind the scenes to see areas of James A. Garfield National Historic

Site not seen on the regular public tour,” said Acting Site Manager Allison Powell stated in the release. “National Park Week is a perfect time to host this Behind the Scenes Day and let people see just how much more there is to this site.”

The Garfield National Historic Site is located at 8095 Mentor Ave. in Mentor.
