Birding Challenge coming Sept. 8-9

The Chagrin River Bird Quest Birding Challenge — a 24-hour birding marathon — takes place Sept. 8-9, and Geauga Park District in partnership with Greater Cleveland Audubon Society and Blackbrook Audubon is encouraging area residents to assemble a team and join.

Those interested can begin by registering with the Audubon Society of Greater Cleveland at www.clevelandaudubon.org under Bird Quest, then coming to The West Woods Nature Center between 4 and 6 p.m. Sept. 8. The West Woods is located at 9465 Kinsman Road in Russell Township.

During team check-in and final registration, participants can also pick up maps, checklists and T-shirts — all free materials — and talk strategy with teammates and naturalists, according to a news release. They will then spend the next 24 hours birding.

Then, between 4 and 7:30 p.m., on Sept. 9, participants will return to the nature center to turn in their checklists for judging and enjoy refreshments, awards and door prizes.

Raffle, bake sale in Claridon

A Basket Raffle and Bake Sale will be held Sept. 16 at Claridon Town Hall, 13930 Mayfield Road. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. and the drawing begins at 3. Proceeds will be split evenly between the Claridon Congregational Church building fund and Claridon Community Helps, according to a news release. For more information, call 440-321-5596.
