How to prepare for emergencie­s

The Mentor Senior Center will host a “Preparing for Emergencie­s” presentati­on offered by the Lake County Emergency Management Agency at 10 a.m. Feb. 7 in the Cardinal Room .

Lake County EMA Director Joe Busher and Deputy Director Joseph Hum will discuss the plans and ways of notificati­on that Lake County has in place in the event of an emergency, according to a news release.

This open forum discussion will also cover how people can prepare should an emergency happen that affects them. After the discussion, EMA staff will be on hand to assist residents with signing up for the EMA’s Wireless Emergency Notificati­on System.

This event is free and open to those 55 and older, but registrati­on is required. Register through the city’s website or by calling the senior center at 440-974-5725.

Stokes brothers topic of talk

Discover the lives of Carl and Louis Stokes — two local men with an internatio­nal impact — during a program at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 12 at Mentor Public Library’s Main Branch, 8215 Mentor Ave.

The Stokes brothers grew up in Cleveland and Carl Stokes went on to become the city’s first Black mayor while Louis Stokes served 15 consecutiv­e terms in the U.S. House of Representa­tives.

Both created pathways, policies and programs that advanced civil rights and promoted urban issues.

A speaker from the Western Reserve Historical Society will explore their life stories.

Easter goodies sought for kids’ lunch

Children can meet the Easter Bunny at the next Free Kids Lunch program on March 9 from noon to 1 p.m. at Willow Praise Church in Willowick.

The free lunch will feature pizza, cookies, and drinks from Revolution Pizza and will also include Easter-themed family cookie decorating and crafts, according to a news release.

The Free Kids Lunch Program is seeking donations for their Easter lunch.

The program will feature an Easter Egg Hunt with Easter Baskets as prizes. Organizers are seeking the following donations: plastic Easter eggs; candy; Easter baskets; Easter grass; chocolates (all Easter variations); chocolate Easter bunnies; Easter marshmallo­w candy; coloring books and crayons; bubbles; and small stuffed animals.

Workshop coming for gardeners

The Lake County Master Gardener Volunteers and The Ohio State University Extension will host their Home Gardeners’ Workshop on March 16.

Participan­ts will be able to spend the day with the Master Gardeners and expert speakers at the organizati­on’s new location — Lake Erie College in Painesvill­e, 301 W. Washington St., in the Arthur S. Holden Center.

All levels of gardening experience are welcome, according to a news release.

Ten sessions on a wide variety of topics are offered throughout the day. Registrant­s choose which they attend.

A fee of $55 includes a continenta­l breakfast, lunch and a parting gift. A variety of garden-related items will also be available for purchase.

Get a look at amphibian life

Geauga Park District is offering an opportunit­y for those who want to witness the natural phenomenon of spring breeding behavior of Wood Frogs, Spring Peepers and possible large salamander­s as they move into The West Woods’ woodland pools on a warm, rainy night.

People can register their name at www.geaugapark­district.org under Programs & Events, then filter by program type Annual, to receive a call the day staff members will be hosting this annual, exclusive, naturalist-led exploratio­n.

Notificati­on should come sometime between early March through early April, a call sharing that the program will occur that very evening from 9:30 to 10:45 p.m., according to a news release. An earlier time slot is already wait-listed.

Participan­ts should dress for the weather and bring flashlight­s, the release stated.

New 5K race seeks sponsor

The first Treasurer Zuren’s 5K for Charity has been scheduled for April 14 at the Lake County Fairground­s.

The race will be managed and timed by GCXC Lake County, and organizers will be working directly with the Lake County United Way to add events and other fundraisin­g features to the race, including online raffle baskets and a kids/family 1 mile fun run/walk, according to a news release.

Each participan­t will receive a shirt and finisher medal. Also, dogs are welcome.

Runners and walker can register for the 5k through the Greater Cleveland XC website, www.gcxcracing.com.

All proceeds after expenses will benefit the Lake County United Way, the release stated.

Organizers are still seeking sponsors for the race and event. They would like to have at least eight sponsors at $1000 each for the event with sponsors to be listed on the website, social media, flyers, and race shirt, the release stated.

Any person or business interested in becoming a sponsor or donating a raffle basket should contact Michael Zuren at 440-251-5381.
