Guardians roster at a glance

- By Jeff Schudel jschudel@news-herald.com

The Guardians’ roster will go through changes as injured pitchers work their way back to the lineup and as young position players such as first baseman Kyle Manzardo hone their skills at Triple-A Columbus.

But for now, here is a look at the players Stephen Vogt is riding with in his first year as manager.

Starting pitchers (5)

57 SHANE BIEBER >> His elbow problems from last season are behind him. Now the question is will he be traded before the season ends?

24 TRISTON MCKENZIE >> McKenzie has something to prove after injuries limited him to only four starts in 2023.

28 TANNER BIBEE >> Bibee does not lack confidence. He won 10 games as a rookie last season and wants to build on that.

41 LOGAN ALLEN >> Logan is the only left-handed starter on the roster. He allowed a team-high 16 home runs last season.

59 CARLOS CARRASCO >> Carrasco was in spring training on a non-roster minor-league invitation. He’ll be the fifth starter until further notice.

32 GAVIN WILLIAMS >> Williams is on the injured list with a sore right elbow. He could eventually be the fifth starter.

Relief pitchers (8)

58 SCOTT BARLOW >> The Guardians acquired Barlow from the Padres for RHP Enyel De Los Santos to strengthen the back end of the bullpen.

46 TYLER BEEDE >> Beede was a candidate to be the fifth starter. He’ll pitch in long relief or be the fifth starter if Carrasco falters.

48 EMMANUEL CLASE >> Clase led the Majors with 42 saves in 2022 and with 44 saves last year. His 12 blown saves in 2023 were also an MLB high.

33 HUNTER GADDIS >> Gaddis was lights out in spring training. He pitched 11 1/3 innings of relief over nine games, struck out 17 and walked only two batters. 49 ELI MORGAN >> Morgan can enter a game with runners on base and get out of a jam to limit the damage. 52 NICK SANDLIN >> Sandlin can work in the seventh inning or as the eighth-inning setup man to hold the fort for Clase.

29 TIM HERRIN >> Herrin, 27, appeared in 23 games as a rookie last year. The lefty can expect a bigger workload this season.

91 CADE SMITH >> Every team needs a reliever to soak up innings if the starter has a short outing. Smith could fill that role.

Catchers (2)

23 BO NAYLOR >> Naylor has prepared himself mentally and physically for the grind of catching 120 or so games this season.

27 AUSTIN HEDGES >> The Guardians brought back Hedges because he is excellent defensively and a true clubhouse leader.

First base

22 Josh Naylor >> Naylor goes all out all the time. He missed more than a month with an oblique injury in 2023 and still led the team with 97 RBI.

Second base

0 ANDRE GIMENEZ >>

The

Guardians need more offensive from Gimenez. He hit .297 in 2022 but just .251 last season.

Shortstop

4 BRAYAN ROCCHIO >> Rocchio covers a lot of ground at shortstop, but he won the job because he showed a steady bat in spring training.

Third base

11 JOSE RAMIREZ >> J-Ram is beginning his 12th season with the Indians/Guardians. At some point this season, he’ll reach 800 career RBI. He has 746.

Outfield (5)

38 STEVEN KWAN >> Kwan is a Gold Glove left fielder. The leadoff hitter led the Guardians with 93 runs scored last season.

2 TYLER FREEMAN >> Freeman is expected to get the bulk of playing time in center field after Myles Straw was demoted to Columbus. 10 RAMON LAUREANO >> The Guardians claimed Laureano on waivers from the A’s last year. He will be the primary right fielder.

17 WILL BRENNAN >> Laureano hits right-handed. Brennan bats left-handed. Brennan will get work in right field, a DH and as a pinch-hitter.

90 ESTEVAN FLORIAL >> Florial could play center field if Freeman is moved to the infield to give a starter a day off,

Utility players (2)

12 DAVID FRY >> Fry can play just about any position. He will be the third-string catcher and back up Josh Naylor at first base.

13 GABRIEL ARIAS >> Arias can play outfield or infield. He is smooth defensively.
