Sally Miller Brooks
HOCKESSIN, DEL. - After a short illness, Sally Miller Brooks passed away on January 11, 2024. She would have been 98 years old in April.
Born to Louis and Margaret Miller in Meadville, PA, and having one sister Mary, the family spent most of their years in Miami, Florida. Just like her father, Sally graduated from Allegheny College in NW Pennsylvania. She met Jim Brooks there and they were married on her graduation day in 1948. Jim’s job with DuPont brought the couple to Wilmington, where Sally had a job as a social worker for four years before having children. In 1951 they joined Westminster Presbyterian Church where they were very active faithful members all their lives. In 1994 Sally and Jim moved to Cokesbury Village Retirement Community in Hockessin, where Sally lived for 30 years. Throughout her life, Sally was a go-getter and she excelled in her endeavors. She received awards for excellence and was recognized for her contributions when in high school, college, and during her decades of volunteering. She began Westminster’s Leisure Club for retirees and led it for 32 years along with serving in other numerous leadership roles at church. She was a girl scout leader and was on the Chesapeake Bay Girl Scout Council. She remained involved with her Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, and was a long-time member of the Academy of Life-Long Learning and the Gordon Heights Garden Club. At Cokesbury she was active in many ways; especially notable was her 15 plus years as chairman of the Hospitality Committee. Hosting old friends and new was Sally’s forte. Up until the close of her life she was inviting people, especially newcomers to Cokesbury, to share a meal.
What a wonderful legacy of a life well-lived Sally has left for her family! In her words, “I loved life, enjoyed entertaining friends, cooking, travel, golf, and reading, and most especially I treasured being with family. I have had a marvelous, happy, fulfilling life.” She had a vital energy and enthusiasm that she shared with others. Sally made a positive impact on the world around her and will truly be greatly missed. Preceding her in death were her beloved parents, sister, and husband. She is survived by her two daughters, Susan Bohn (Ralt), Patty Brown (Brick), and their children, Brooks Bohn (Logan), Laura Taylor ( Wyatt), Craig Bohn (Lisa), Cynthia Gray, Everett Gray (Angie), 12 great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter.
A Celebration of Life will be held on February 24, 2024 at 2 PM at Cokesbury Village, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin, DE 19707.
