Richard Hunt Burgess

NEWARK - Richard Hunt Burgess, age 86, of Newark, passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2024.

Richard was born in Greensboro, NC, son of the late Sarah Elizabeth (Hunt) and Larus Ranford Burgess. Dick grew up in Dumont, NJ and graduated with a double major bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering and Metallurgy from North Carolina State University. Dick and Ellie married right out of college and Dick began his career at TRW as a metallurgical engineer while starting a family and attending night law school. Dick received his law degree from the Cleveland Marshall Law School and began his career working as an Intellectual Property Attorney, first at General Electric and later at DuPont, until his retirement. Dick was also a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) and was on the AIPLA Board of Directors in the early1990’s. Dick and Ellie travelled widely, and Dick was the photographer for the AIPLA at its annual meetings around the world for 20 years.

In his younger years, Dick was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed canoeing and hiking with the Wilmington Trail Club, often accompanied by Ellie. In his free time, Dick enjoyed photography, his main hobby in retirement. Dick and Ellie enjoyed classes at the Osher Life Long Learning Institute at the University of Delaware campus in Wilmington where he studied a number of languages and taught Russian. In addition to his parents, Dick was also predeceased by his brother, Robert Burgess.

Dick is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, just shy of their 65th anniversary, Eleanore Francis Burgess; sons, John Hunt and Carl Foulds Burgess (married to Alona); grandchildren, Evan, Andrew (married to Amina), Paul, Nicholas, and Alexandra; and numerous nieces, nephews, and close family friends whom he all loved.

A memorial service for Richard will be held at a later date when the wider family can assemble.
