How many aftershocks have been counted after Friday’s earthquake in NJ?
Forty-seven aftershocks have been recorded in the five days since a 4.8 magnitude earthquake near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, shook the region last Friday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The largest aftershock was reported near Gladstone in Somerset County, New Jersey, about seven hours after the initial quake. While it was initially measured at a 4.0 magnitude, updated data showed the quake was actually a 3.8 magnitude. It was one of only a few aftershocks that could be felt by people and not just machines.
Nearly half of all aftershocks reported by the United States Geological Survey occurred on the same day as the initial earthquake, followed by 13 aftershocks on Saturday, five aftershocks Sunday, four aftershocks Monday, two aftershocks Tuesday and, as of data released at noon, two Wednesday.
Aftershocks had an overall average magnitude of 1.8, according to the United States Geological Survey. These quakes are typically registered only by monitoring devices.
Aftershocks will likely continue in the coming days; however, scientists say most will be small. There is an 11% chance that an aftershock will be magnitude 3 or higher and less than a 1% chance that an aftershock will be stronger than the initial earthquake.
If you do feel any shaking, experts say you should drop to the floor, find cover and hold on.
