-

Mary Mercedes McCord (Bull) Madsen, 84, of Bloomfield, CT and formerly of Woodbury and Roxbury, CT, beloved wife for 64 years of George Marcus Madsen, passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, April 11, 2020, at UConn Medical Center in Farmington, CT. Born in Minneapolis, MN on April 5, 1936, daughter of the late Benjamin Seth Bull, Jr. and Mercedes (Krieger) Bull, she was raised in Wayzata, MN and was a graduate of Northrop Collegiate School, Class of 1954. During her sophomore year at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, Mary met George Madsen, whom she married three months later on December 30, 1955. They recently moved to the Seabury Retirement Community in Bloomfield to be closer to family.

Mary was an accomplished fabric artist, excelling in needlepoint and quilting. She opened The Strawberry Patch in New Milford, CT with two partners, and later worked at Feather Ridge Design and Needlepoint in Washington Depot, CT. Her love for beauty and art graced both her work and life, and her many friends were the appreciative recipients of her gifts and kindness. With laughter and love, she had a way of making people feel special. Along with her husband George, Mary travelled the world on adventures too numerous to count; a trip to Kenya inspired a much loved collection of giraffe figurines. An avid reader, she served on the Roxbury Library Board of Trustees. Most of all, Mary loved her family and was an attentive mother to three rambunctious children, whose adventures kept her young and quick-witted. She will be deeply missed.

Besides her husband, she leaves three children, Catherine Madsen and her husband

Joseph Barckett of Dartmouth, MA; William Madsen and his wife Rev. Sandra Fischer of North Granby, CT; and Sarah Madsen of Hancock, VT; five grandchildren, Carlin Tripp and his fiancé, Nicole Adriance of Rumford, RI; Rachel Madsen and her husband Alejandro Carrillo of Sayulita, Mexico; Naomi Madsen of Brooklyn, NY; and Trey and Claire Madsen, both of North Granby, CT; three greatgrandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Barbara DeHart of Rochester, VT and Marie Dupree and her husband Keith of New Milford, CT; a nephew, Jonathan Dupree and his wife Lisa of Danbury, CT; and a niece, Sarah Estelle Dupree and her partner George Dunham of Frederick, MD; as well as four nieces in the Phoenix, Arizona area, one deceased. She was predeceased by her stepfather Richard Crawford; a brother, Benjamin Seth Bull, III; and a brother-in-law, Col. Edward DeHart.

Throughout her life, Mary supported and donated to numerous progressive and environmental charities. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Planned Parenthood or the Natural Resources Defense Council.
