New Preston house fire displaces 3 people, 2 dogs
WASHINGTON — A family of three and two dogs were displaced after Wednesday’s house fire in the New Preston section of town.
“We know approximately where the fire started, but exactly how we probably won’t know,” said Fire Marshal Thomas Osbourne, whose office is investigating the two-alarm fire at 45 Litchfield Turnpike.
“The room of origin was the bedroom,” Osbourne said, adding the cause of the fire will probably be ruled undetermined.
Firefighters were called to the singlefamily home around 9:10 p.m. after the owners came home and discovered the fire.
Three people and two dogs lived in the house, Osbourne said. The two dogs were inside when the fire broke out, he said, but they both got out unharmed.
Firefighters arrived to find “very heavy fire” coming from the two-story house, according to dispatch reports.
New Milford and Bantam sent mutual aid and Eversource was notified.
The fire was knocked down around 9:33 p.m. and no injuries were reported.
The fire left the bedroom “completely burned,” Osbourne said, and the rest of the second floor had heat, smoke and water damage.
Osbourne said the first floor “made out a lot better” but still had “a lot of water damage.”
The house was built in 1979 and is owned by Jason and Julie McKay, according to land records.
Osbourne said the fire displaced the family and he believes they are “staying with relatives right now.”
Firefighters were attending a meeting at Washington’s firehouse when the fire broke out Wednesday night, and Osbourne said they were able to save a lot of the house due to their quick response.
“They saddled up, got to the house and got the water on the fire really quick,” Osbourne said.
