Aquarion gets permit to upgrade New Fairfield well pump station

- By Kendra Baker

NEW FAIRFIELD — Work to expand and upgrade Aquarion Water Company’s Heron View Road pump station may soon get underway following zoning officials’ recent approval of a special permit application.

During its Wednesday meeting, the Zoning Commission approved Snyder Civil Engineering LLC’s application for the construction of a well station addition, as well as other sitework, at Aquarion’s hillside facility.

Aquarion’s facility near The Woods at Dunham Pond condominium complex currently utilizes three wells and a pump station to treat and distribute well water to customers, according to Snyder Civil’s special permit application.

The water company is looking to construct a 12by-11-foot addition to its existing pump station, in order to house an upgraded treatment system.

Project engineer Zachary Kuegler said there will also be “some other site work related to underground piping” in order to increase the reliability of Aquarion’s water system.

“There’s also an underground storage tank where the building addition is going to be, which we’ll be removing,” Kuegler said.

Zoning Enforcement Officer Evan White noted removal of the storage tank will require the zoning commission’s approval because “any excavation within five feet of a property line has to be deemed so and approved by the commission.”

Kuegler said arrangements are being made with the Dunham Pond Condominium Association “to make sure any grass or any damage or work that’s done is restored to their satisfaction.”

The contractor is “hoping to get mobilized in the next couple weeks,” Kuegler said, and he expects sitework to last three months.
