Cops: Waterbury man fatally shot in Danbury
DANBURY — A police investigation is underway after a Waterbury man was fatally shot Sunday night in the area of Beaver and Elm streets.
Police responded to the area around 10:35 p.m. and found the 39year-old with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was transported to Danbury Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to authorities.
“The identity of the victim is known but is not being released at this time so that family members can first be informed,” Detective Lt. Mark Williams said.
The shooting occurred at a vigil for a young man who had died unexpectedly earlier this month.
Mayor Mark Boughton said police are not sure what caused the shooting or what, if any, connection there is to the vigil.
“In other words, it wasn’t a retaliatory act that we’re aware of,” Boughton said. “It’s under investigation by our detectives and they’re excellent. They will find who did this and hold them accountable.”
Police are investigating ing and urge anyone with information to call Detective Travis Kupchok at 203-797-2168, or the Anonymous TIPS Line at 203-790-8477.
