The importance of voting

- Editor’s note: The writer is a student at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury.

The right to vote is one that must be exercised by everyone who is eligible to vote, especially with the upcoming election. I cannot stress enough that this election is the most important in recent history and every vote counts.

In today’s society it appears many people take voting for granted and that’s a huge problem. The amount of times people say “It’s only one vote it doesn’t matter,” is appalling. Due to many people having that mindset, it results in thousands, even hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of potential votes that are not cast. If those votes were casted, then the whole election could change, so, every vote does matter. If there is a time to vote, it is now.

One of the most important aspects of voting is that it changes not only the country, but also your community as well. A lot of people don’t realize that local elections are just as, if not more, important than the presidential election. Local elections put the candidates who the people vote for and believe will better the community, in position to make changes. Those changes directly affect the community and people in it, and that is why it is important to vote for local elections as well.

The impact an election makes are substantial, no matter what election it is, presidential, state or local. I want to stress that if you want change to come, then you can do your part by voting. When you vote, your opinion is not only heard but counted, and that can make the real difference. If you have a strong belief in something, talking about it can only do so much, however going out and voting is doing your part to make a change.
