Darien’s Knight, Keating join select company
A pair of Darien natives joined some select company this week.
Spencer Knight, a sophomore goalie for the Boston College men’s hockey program, is one of 39 players selected to USA Hockey’s National Junior Team Evaluation Camp. The camp will be held from Oct. 8-13 in Plymouth, Minn and is part of the evaluation process in selecting the U.S. team competing in the World Junior Championship.
Knight, one of four goalies selected, was the 13th overall pick by Florida in the 2019 NHL Draft. He was 23-8-2 with a 1.97 goals against average in 33 games as a freshman at Boston College. He played in five games at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championships and posted a 2.49 goals against average.
Brian Keating, a long snapper with the UConn football team that is not playing this fall, was named a Campbell Trophy semifinalist.
Stonehill offensive lineman Derek Ivey of Newtown and Wesleyan running back Glenn Smith
were also among the 199 players listed as candidates for the award given to the top football scholar-athlete.
The National Football Foundation is expected to announce 12-14 finalists next month.
FAIRFIELD WOMEN’S BASKETBALL CAPTAINS NAMED
The Fairfield women’s basketball program announced that Katie Armstrong, Rachel Hakes and Lou Lopez-Senechal were named captains for the upcoming season.
Armstrong ranked in the top 10 in the MAAC in both
points (14.0) and rebounds (7.0) last season and scored in double figures in 10 of the last 11 games of the season.
Hakes will be a team captain for the second straight season. Hakes started 29 of 30 games in her sophomore season, she finished second in the MAAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.0) and 10th in assists (3.2).
Lopez-Senechal led the Stags in scoring in each of her first two collegiate seasons. The first team AllMAAC pick was fifth in the conference with 15.5 points per game.
