Farmers’ markets are essential in time of pandemic, or anytime

As a member of the Danbury Farmer’s Market Collaborat­ive for the last 10 years, I have witnessed firsthand year after year, the difference this Farmers Market Initiative has made in the lives of so many families and children. Some memorable hallmarks include family walks, summer camp field trips, nutrition education, honoring veterans and the thousands of families every summer that benefit from doubling the value of their SNAP, WIC and Senior coupons used at the market. A huge thank you goes out to those who assist with this sponsorshi­p, Peggy Zamore and City Center Danbury who have remained flexible throughout the years to enable more people to be served.

There are more than 30 community stakeholde­rs striving to provide equitable access to fresh food for all Danbury area residents to promote better health. Key to better health is eating more fruits and vegetables for the prevention of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, hypertensi­on and even cancer. People living with these chronic conditions do better and can live longer if they eat more fruits and vegetables. Eating well promotes healthy aging for older adults. Children who learn to purchase and prepare fruits and vegetable also learn to love eating them.

The Danbury Farmers Market Collaborat­ive is a community asset and a win for the local farmers who have longstandi­ng loyalty with the initiative and a win for local residents who eat more local produce.

The Farmers Market happens Fridays through Oct. 30th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Danbury Train Station.
