MAAC cancels track, swimming championships

-

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced Tuesday that it has canceled its indoor track and field championships and postponed its swimming and diving championships.

“The MAAC membership looked at various options for indoor track and regrettably saw no viable option under the current circumstances presented by the COVID-19 pandemic,” MAAC commissioner Rich Ensor said in a statement. “The conference plans to conduct its rescheduled Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships in March and, combined with the outdoor track season, there seemed adequate competition options for the impacted student-athletes.”

“The postponement of the Swimming and Diving Championships provides the coaches and student-athletes the opportunity to properly train for their events,” Ensor added. “MAAC administrators and the sport committee will study competition models for April dates while awaiting further guidance on venue restrictions that arise from the pandemic and state and local health regulations.”

SCHEDULE UPDATES

The MAAC announced Tuesday afternoon that it has moved up Iona’s two men’s basketball games at Quinnipiac from Jan. 8-9 to Dec. 11-12, both at 7 p.m. The Dec. 11 game will air live on ESPNU. Quinnipiac was supposed to be off that weekend, but Iona’s Dec. 11-12 games against Monmouth were moved to late February.

Hockey East announced Tuesday that UConn will host Boston University on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 at Freitas Ice Forum.

STILL RECEIVING VOTES

Quinnipiac women’s hockey has yet to play a game but is still receiving votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey top-10 poll released Tuesday. The Bobcats are one of two teams outside the top 10 that were named on ballots. They were the only one last week, but Providence (3-0-1) swept then-No. 8 Boston College over the weekend to draw votes. Quinnipiac was one of three teams also receiving votes in Monday’s USCHO poll.
