BETHEL — Police are mourning the loss of one of their own after the death last week of a retired secretary who spent decades working at the department.

Margaret A. “Peggy” Sansone was born in New York City on July 21, 1927, daughter of Charles and Margaret (McLoughlin) Brumaghin. She died in her home on Nov. 25, her obituary said. She was 93.

She graduated from St. Vincent Farra High School in Manhattan, holding various jobs across New York City ranging from a page girl at Rockefeller Center to dietitian at New York City Hospital, her obituary said.

Sansone moved to Bethel in 1973, becoming the secretary to the chief at the police department. She spent 43 years there, retiring at 89.

“It was working there that gave her great joy as she made lifelong friends and all were part of her extended family,” her obituary said.

In a statement, the Bethel Police Department said the staff was mourning the loss of Sansone, known to many in the department as “Miss Peg.”

“Despite her title, Miss Peg often commented that she was the department secretary and went out of her way to assist others in any way that was needed,” the police statement said. “With a smile on her face, and a glint in her eye, Miss Peg never failed to brighten our days. Thank you for your unwavering kindness, your humor and your service, Miss Peg. You will be sorely missed by us all.”

During her time with Bethel police, Sansone worked for four chiefs before she retired in 2016.

Sansone is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be private.

A Mass celebration was held Thursday at St. Mary Church in Bethel. Mass was followed by burial at Elmwood Cemetery on Route 302.

In lieu of flowers, family asked those interested to make contributions in her memory to the Danbury Animal Welfare Society.
