Marion E. Mannion

Marion Elizabeth Mannion passed away on December 19, 2020, at the age of 104, the eldest child of Daniel T. MacDonald of Scotstown, Quebec, and Henrietta M. McCaughey of Summerside, Prince Edward Island. Marion was born December 8, 1916, in Haverhill, Massachusetts, moving to Danbury with her parents in her early teens. She was a graduate of Danbury High School, Class of 1934-B. After her graduation, she was employed by the Southern New England Telephone Company until her marriage to John T. (Jack) Mannion of Bethel. During World War II she worked for the Department of the Navy at the Barden Corporation, which was formed to manufacture bearings for the Norden bombsight, until joining her husband who was stationed in Ft. Pierce, Florida at the Naval Amphibious Training Base with the Sea Bees. Returning to Danbury after the war, Marion and Jack built their home on Mountainville Avenue where she raised her family and resided (on her own) until 2018. She retired from the City of Danbury Engineering Department in 1986 where she had been employed for more than twenty years. Marion was a parishioner of St. Peter Church where she and Jack were married in 1940. She was an active member of the Mothers’ Guild for fifteen years while her children attended the parish grammar school. At that time she was also a community service volunteer as a member of the Danbury Junior Service League. She was an avid club, tournament-caliber golfer, and a founding member of the WAMEGOs (War Memorial Golf). She and her husband were long-time members of the Vail’s Grove Golf Club at Peach Lake, New York where they spent many enjoyable weekends and evenings chasing the white ball. She was also a tournamentcaliber Bridge player and played the game at a high level well into her 90s, winning her firstever Grand Slam at the age of ninety-five. As accomplished a golfer as she was, she never did get the equivalent hole-inone. Those who were fortunate enough to receive one of her sweaters will attest to her knitting skill. After retirement, she and Jack spent winters in Ft. Myers Beach and traveled extensively throughout this country and Europe. Marion is survived by her sons Michael J. of Brookfield and James M. (Theresa) of Silver Spring, Maryland; her granddaughters Elizabeth M. Mannion, M.D. of Greenville, South Carolina and Mary T. Mannion of Silver Spring; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, sisters Christine (MacDonald) Collins and Laura I. MacDonald, and brother Donald T. MacDonald. Due to the concerns about social gatherings affecting us all at this time, there will be no calling hours. All are invited to join the family for a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, December 28, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Church, 121 Main St., Danbury. Interment will follow in the Mannion Family plot in St. Mary Cemetery, Bethel.
