Barneys at Saks to debut on Greenwich Avenue

- By Robert Marchant

GREENWICH — A high-end retail store on Greenwich Avenue is getting a makeover and a rebranding.

Saks Fifth Avenue The Collective will become Barneys at Saks next week.

According to the Saks management, the 14,000-square-foot store at 200 Greenwich Ave. will feature men’s shoes and accessories on the first floor, the first time Saks has offered men’s merchandise in the Greenwich market. The second floor will sell women’s clothing.

Barneys New York was a longtime fashion retailer that fell into bankruptcy in 2019. But the brand name was later acquired by Authentic Brands for licensing deals with other companies.

A new version of Barneys New York has already opened on the fifth floor of the Manhattan location of Saks.

“We’re bringing Barneys to Saks in a way that’s relevant to today’s luxury consumer and focused on discovery, the unexpected, and fun. Barneys at Saks is an extension of our current offering, with established and emerging designers. It’s an extension of what we always do,” Tracy Margolies, chief merchant of Saks, told Womens’ Wear Daily, a trade magazine.

Barneys was founded in 1923 and had a loyal following among fashionconscious consumers. Saks was founded by Andrew Saks in Washington, D.C., in 1867, and it opened in New York City in 1902. The Fifth Avenue location of the business came into reality in

1924.

Saks came to Greenwich in 1996, moving into the old F.W. Woolworth building, which had operated there since 1916.

The new store will be unveiled Monday, although the name is already on the windows and awnings of the Greenwich Avenue location.
