Ernest Winkler, of Sherman, CT, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 6, 2021, at the age of 80. He was born November 27, 1940 in Whitestone, New York. Mr. Winkler was a New York City police officer (NYPD) before becoming a Firefighte­r with FDNY Hook and Ladder Co. 129. Following his retirement from the FDNY, he served as the Town of Sherman’s ZEO for Planning and Zoning, as well as Wetlands. He also served as the Town Fire Marshal. In addition, he a was a volunteer EMT and firefighte­r with the SVFD.

After completing his enlistment with the Navy, he later joined the Coast Guard Reserves, retiring after 31 years with the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer.

Mr. Winkler is survived by his wife Maureen (FINN); sons Kenneth (Nancy) Winkler and Jonathan (Tracy) Winkler; brother (Walter (Kim) Winkler; grandchild­ren Steven, Jason, Gavin, Emma and Cara and nieces Karen and Tracy and nephew Karl. He was predecease­d by his son Christophe­r.

Devotion to God, Family and Country exemplifie­d a life well lived and he will remain close in our hearts forever.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, September 14, 2021. at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Sherman, CT. Calling hours will be held Monday, September 13, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford, CT. Masks are required for all who are attending.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tuberous Sclerosis Associatio­n or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
