Fata, Rebels look to QB McCormack to lead the way

- By Will Aldam

New Fairfield’s strong 2019 run came to an unceremonious end at the hands of Killingly in the Class M quarterfinals.

Now, the challenge for Rebels coach Anthony Fata will be replicating that same success with an almost entirely new team. New Fairfield has dropped in division class this year and will compete in Class S.

“A few kids on this team right now got some varsity burn as a sophomores,” Fata said. “Other than that it is a brand new season. It is a clean slate and we just have to get better every day.”

Returning for New Fairfield are seniors Johnni Bassani and Kevin Martinson. Beyond those two it will be a completely fresh roster.

Much of New Fairfield’s success will come down to junior quarterback Justin McCormack. “He’s a good

quarterback,” Fata says. “He knows the position and I am confident he will be able to do the job I ask him to do.”

The Rebels will open the 2021 season on the road vs. defending Class M champion Weston. New Fairfield also has dates with defending Class S champion Sheehan (SCC), at Fitch-Groton (ECC) and Lyman Hall (SCC) in its CT HS Football

Alliance crossover games. Late, key games include two road trips to face Masuk and defending Class LL champion Newtown.
