Patrick Cantlay commits to Travelers Championship

- By Christine Butterfield

Patrick Cantlay, No. 4 in the Official World Golf Ranking, has committed to compete in the 2023 Travelers Championship held at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell.

He has a fondness for this tournament as Cantlay set a PGA Tour scoring record at the Travelers Championship in 2011. When he was 19, Cantlay shot a 10-under par 60 in the second round, which remains the lowest singleround score by an amateur in PGA Tour history.

The eight-time PGA Tour winner has finished with a T15 or better in each of his past five starts at TPC River Highlands and will be making his ninth tournament appearance.

“Having played in our tournament several times, Patrick is always an exciting addition to the field,” said Travelers Championship Tournament Director Nathan Grube in a release. “He seems to be in contention every time he plays and will fit in perfectly with the other elite golfers who have already committed.”

Cantlay’s most impressive PGA TOUR season came in 2021, when he was named Player of the Year and won the FedExCup points title. His most recent TOUR victory came at last year’s BMW Championship, and he achieved a pair of top-three finishes this season: Cantlay tied for second at the Shriners Children’s Open and was third at the Genesis Invitational.

“We’ve known Patrick really well ever since giving him a sponsor’s ex- emption when he was a student at UCLA, and he’s turned into one of the best golfers in the world,” Andy Bessette, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer at Travelers said in a release. “His continued support of the Travelers Championship and what we stand for as a community partner is greatly appreciated.”

He joins top golfers Scottie Scheffler (No. 2), Rory McIIroy (No. 3) and defending champion Xander Schauffele (No. 6) who have already committed to play for a tournament-record purse of $20 million.

The 2023 Travelers Championship will be held June 19-25.
