Craig’s Fine Jewelry closes doors in Ridgefield

- By Sandra Diamond Fox STAFF WRITER

RIDGEFIELD — After nearly three-quarters of a century, Craig’s Fine Jewelry in town is closing on Friday.

A sign on the front door of the Main Street business says, “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your loyal support and making us part of your special occasions for 74 years.” The owners declined to comment.

Diana Spence, executive director of the Ridgefield Chamber of Commerce, described the family-owned jewelry store as a Ridgefield staple.

“It’s a mix of emotions seeing Craig’s Fine Jewelry closing,” she said. “This store has been a cornerstone of Main Street Ridgefield, woven into the fabric of our town. Billy Craig has been more than just a business owner; he’s been an active member of our community… His commitment to ‘shop local’ and community building has been truly inspiring. While we’ll miss having Craig’s Fine Jewelry around, Billy’s impact on our community will always sparkle.”

Ridgefield First Selectperson Rudy Marconi said the Craig family “has provided a service to many residents in Ridgefield over the years and we appreciate their many years on Main Street.

Helen Kiernan Craig purchased the jewelry store from Francis D. Martin in 1950, said Jack Sanders, a Ridgefield historian. Craig’s son Norman Craig, and his wife, Elsie Fossi Craig, operated the business before their children, Billy, Karen and Lori Craig, took it over. In 2004, Billy Craig became the sole owner, Sanders said.

Norman Craig, a longtime volunteer fireman, served as a member of the Ridgefield’s Board of Finance. Billy Craig was a founder of Downtown Ridgefield, a community organization.

A social media post announcing the news of the business closing had over 120 comments in one day.
