- By Diana Haecker

Twelve runners, six bikers and five walkers woke up early on Saturday, July 24 to participate in the annual Wyatt Earp Dexter Challenge. The event is put on by Norton Sound Health Corporation’s CAMP department. Runners and bikers started at Old St. Joe’s taking two different directions to reach the same destination: Dexter. The runners set out for the eight-mile race on Bering Street, went over foggy Dexter Pass and descended on the finish line at the intersection of Beam Road and Dexter Bypass Road. The bikers took another scenic route, leaving Old St. Joe’s heading south and following the Nome-Council Highway, taking the Beam Road, ending up at said intersection.

First to cross the finish line was biker Joe Sem who finished the 12mile bike race in 41:38. According to fellow bikers at the finish line, he went on to bike to Salmon Lake and back that day. Next across the finish was runner TJ Wright with a running time of 48:57.
