Wilton’s McCormick takes second in 3,200 meters
NEW BRITAIN — Pomperaug High School freshman Katherine Wiser spent much of the championship portion of the cross country season last fall chasing Wilton senior Morgan McCormick
This outdoor track season, however, it’s been McCormick chasing Wiser.
Wiser pulled away with a late surge to win the 3,200 meters at the State Open track and field championships Monday with a time of 10:36.72. McCormick took second in 10:45.76 in what was a talented field at Willow Brook Park that also featured 3,200 indoor State Open champ Elizabeth Stockman of Rocky Hill, who placed third Monday in 10:49.38.
“I was sticking with the pack in the beginning,” Wiser said. “My coach told me to take risks if I have to, so with three laps to go, I went for it.”
Last fall, McCormick won both the Class L and the State Open cross country championships, with Wiser taking second place both times. Last week at the Class L outdoor championships, Wiser won the 3,200 in 10:44.4 and set the Class L state record. McCormick took second there in 10:53.20.
“I ran against Morgan in cross country, and she was great competition,” Wiser.
The girls team title came down to the final event of the day, the 4x400 relay. Entering that event, Southington was in first place with 35 points, seven ahead of Danbury and eight ahead of Bloomfield. Southington didn’t have an entry in the relay, but it didn’t matter, as their 35 points held up.
Danbury came in 16th in the final relay, with the quartet of Natalee Seipio, Leah Sarkisian, Olivia Turk and Alexandra Chakar finishing in 4:07.38, as the Hatters took third in the team standings.
