Thomas Irving Smith, 97, of Norwalk, CT passed away on October 11, 2018 at Norwalk Hospital with his family by his side. Mr. Smith was born on February 23, 1921 in Vista, NY to the late Thomas and Sarah Van Name Smith.

After graduating from High School, Thomas enlisted in the Army. He was in the Army Air Corp, 13 Air Force, 42nd bomb group, 69th bomb squadron. He flew 50 missions in the Philippine­s and New Guinea as a tail gunner in a B 25 bomber, and received an Air Medal for meritoriou­s achievemen­t while participat­ing in aerial flight.

After the war, Thomas worked for over 40 years at Southern New England Telephone (SNET), where he began his career as a cable splicer and retired as a constructi­on project manager.

When not working, Thomas was an avid bowler, an occasional hunter, and a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Oddfellows where he at one time served as president.

Thomas is survived in life by his beloved wife of 68 years, Marguerite Tiani Smith of Norwalk. He is also survived by his daughter Linda Smith Dvornek of Norwalk, his grandchild­ren Jeffrey Dvornek of Stratford and Allison Dvornek Bonesteel of Summervill­e, SC, and 4 great grandchild­ren. He is predecease­d by brothers Clifford, Ralph and Edward Smith.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 16th, 2018 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St., New Canaan, CT. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 16th at 12:00 p.m. at St. Matthew Church in Norwalk, CT. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in New Canaan, CT.
