Thomas Irv­ing Smith

Thomas Irv­ing Smith, 97, of Nor­walk, CT passed away on Oc­to­ber 11, 2018 at Nor­walk Hos­pi­tal with his fam­ily by his side. Mr. Smith was born on Fe­bru­ary 23, 1921 in Vista, NY to the late Thomas and Sarah Van Name Smith.

Af­ter grad­u­at­ing from High School, Thomas en­listed in the Army. He was in the Army Air Corp, 13 Air Force, 42nd bomb group, 69th bomb squadron. He flew 50 mis­sions in the Philip­pines and New Guinea as a tail gun­ner in a B 25 bomber, and re­ceived an Air Medal for mer­i­to­ri­ous achieve­ment while par­tic­i­pat­ing in aerial flight.

Af­ter the war, Thomas worked for over 40 years at South­ern New Eng­land Tele­phone (SNET), where he be­gan his ca­reer as a cable splicer and re­tired as a con­struc­tion pro­ject man­ager.

When not work­ing, Thomas was an avid bowler, an oc­ca­sional hunter, and a long­time mem­ber of the Fra­ter­nal Or­der of Od­dfel­lows where he at one time served as pres­i­dent.

Thomas is sur­vived in life by his beloved wife of 68 years, Marguerite Tiani Smith of Nor­walk. He is also sur­vived by his daugh­ter Linda Smith Dvornek of Nor­walk, his grand­chil­dren Jef­frey Dvornek of Strat­ford and Al­li­son Dvornek Bon­es­teel of Summerville, SC, and 4 great grand­chil­dren. He is pre­de­ceased by broth­ers Clif­ford, Ralph and Ed­ward Smith.

The fam­ily will re­ceive friends on Tues­day, Oc­to­ber 16th, 2018 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Hoyt Fu­neral Home, 199 Main St., New Canaan, CT. A Mass of Chris­tian burial will be cel­e­brated on Tues­day, Oc­to­ber 16th at 12:00 p.m. at St. Matthew Church in Nor­walk, CT. In­ter­ment will fol­low at Lake­view Ceme­tery in New Canaan, CT.
